Are you ready to take on a pivotal role in shaping the legal framework of a fast-growing global trading company? Do you thrive in dynamic, ambitious environments and want to be part of our journey to expand across the Asia-Pacific region?

If you’re a self-starter who is excited about taking full ownership of the legal landscape in a high-growth business, we want to hear from you! As a Legal Counsel, you will be responsible for overseeing all legal matters in APAC, with a primary focus on Japan, New Zealand, and Australia - for now, as we expect to grow in the future.

The Journey

Since 2017, we have been on a journey with the clear goal of rethinking energy trading and organizational culture. A core element in this journey is to rethink how data and technology are central part of our business, and we call this beautiful mix of energy and technology 'EnergyTech'. We have been very successful with our business in Europe and US, and in 2024, we expanded our journey to APAC and with offices in Singapore and Tokyo.

In this role, you will develop a proactive legislative and contractual risk management approach. You will ensure compliance with applicable legislation by monitoring and analyzing legal developments, and by drafting and implementing policies. Moreover, you will act as an advisor to our business by providing legal guidance and advice on a wide range of matters, from standard to bespoke energy trading contracts and beyond.

You will collaborate with various internal teams and manage external legal vendors to ensure compliance and mitigate risks. As we expand, your contributions will be key to supporting our ambitious growth strategy and establishing a strong legal foundation in the region.

Responsibilities – you will:

  • Develop and implement legal policies and procedures that align with our commercial goals
  • Provide legal advice and support across APAC, primarily focusing on Japan, New Zealand, and Australia
  • Monitor and interpret legal developments across the region, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations
  • Draft, review, and negotiate energy trading-related contracts (primarily, but not exclusively)
  • Provide legal advice and feedback on energy trading-related legal advice requests (primarily, but not exclusively)
  • Conduct horizon scanning to identify potential legal risks and legislative changes
  • Analyze the impact of new legislation on the organization's activities and communicate it to the organization
  • Collaborate  with various teams to develop a sound legal risk management practice

Qualifications – we imagine that you:

  • Hold a degree in law or a related field, with strong expertise in commercial law
  • Have experience in an in-house legal team or law firm - experience within the energy industry, especially with legal matters involving onboarding counterparts or energy asset origination, is an advantage, but not a requirement.
  • Have experience managing external legal vendors and providing legal support in a corporate environment
  • Have experience with APAC markets - especially Japan, New Zealand, or Australia is an advantage, but not a requirement
  • Have any level of Japanese language proficiency, which would be beneficial, but is not required

Personal skills – we expect that you:

  • Have a commercial mindset and the ability to navigate complex industries, interact with diverse stakeholders, and engage with the international legal order
  • Are organized, efficient, and able to prioritize in a dynamic business environment
  • Can demonstrate excellent communication skills and confidently share legal opinions and advice
  • Are a team player who values collaboration while working independently
  • Can maintain a positive, can-do attitude and take initiative
  • Can solve complex legal issues with autonomy and independence
  • Are proactive, self-driven, and comfortable owning legal matters in a fast-paced, growth-oriented business

What you can expect from us:

  • The opportunity to build a legal function that is essential to our company’s growth in a rapidly expanding business
  • High level of ownership and responsibility from day one
  • A supportive and ambitious team that values honesty, transparency, and bold thinking
  • A flexible working environment in Singapore or support for relocation if required

Benefits:

  • Flexible working hours
  • Health insurance
  • Pension scheme
  • Maternity and paternity leave included paid and unpaid options
